Most colleges and universities now require you to write an admission essay as part of your application. They may post a question or simply let you write about yourself. It is only natural that you would want to showcase all your achievements and skills you have acquired through the years. Among the common weak points in application are low grades or test scores or even the lack of extra-curricular activities. Since these stands out as a disadvantage, it would be best to provide the mitigating circumstances that will explain them. The lack of extra-curricular activities may be explained by the fact that your family moved a lot which prevented you from participating in such activities. The idea is to explain and not to blame others. Being accountable for mistakes will only impress your reader. This will show your maturity and your ability to accept the consequences of your actions.

Another thing you want to avoid doing in your admission essay is to complain about your disadvantages or misfortunes in life. The committee will not feel sorry for you. While some weaknesses may be used as leverage to your application, it does not mean that you will list down all your flaws. Weaknesses should be discussed as briefly as possible. They should not the highlight of your essay. Remember to focus on the things you have learned from these disadvantages. The admission committee does not think that anyone is perfect but that is not a reason for you to admit all your flaws in your admission essay.
